In the second quarter, Mexico saw a concerning surge in cargo theft, with an average of 58 incidents per day, primarily targeting food, beverages, and building materials, according to a report by Austin-based supply chain visibility firm Overhaul. The central region of Mexico remained the hotspot for cargo theft, accounting for 62% of incidents. Notably, thefts during nighttime hours (6 p.m. to midnight) increased during April, May, and June.

The report also highlighted a rise in violence associated with cargo theft, with criminal groups expanding their areas of operation and using heightened levels of violence. The Arco Norte Highway, on the northern outskirts of Mexico City, emerged as one of the most dangerous routes for truck drivers, with injuries and even fatalities reported.

In contrast, the U.S. experienced 240 cargo thefts in the first half of 2023, with California, Texas, and Georgia having the highest theft rates and an average loss of $360,000.

To combat cargo theft effectively, the report emphasizes the need for cooperation among law enforcement, shippers, carriers, and cross-border trade stakeholders to establish a culture of prevention and safety awareness throughout the supply chain.
